Q: Why should I hire an editor when I have spell check and grammar check?

A: Editing is a complex task that requires not only a precise understanding of standard usage, but also a "good ear" and sense of rhythm.

Besides improving the quality of a piece of writing, a professional editor can detect and correct problems that might damage a writer's reputation, such as missing or erroneous information, inconsistencies, ambiguities, and logical fallacies.

Q: What can I do to make my writing compelling?

A: Successful writers know how to get and hold their readers' attention. They use concrete, sensory-packed diction.  They add transitions to help readers navigate through the paragraphs.  They create relevant content that entices their readers. They write clearly, provocatively, and judiciously, so readers keep reading.

Q: What sort of editing do I need?

A: That depends.  Some writers need an editor early on in the writing process to help develop and focus their writing.  They need developmental editing.

Some writers easily produce reams of writing, but have trouble focusing and structuring their writing.  They need substantive editing.

Many writers benefit from a detailed critique that analyzes and evaluates the manuscript, assesses its strengths and weaknesses, and makes recommendations for revision.

Most writers depend on copy editors to track down any errors and inconsistencies in their writing.  It's not easy to spot the errors in your own writing.

As for proofreading--well, who doesn't need it?  Writers are simply too close to their writing to see what's wrong with it.

MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE:

The critique examines the parts in relation to the whole, quality of writing, potential audience, and marketability.  You will receive a detailed 30-page assessment of your manuscript's strengths and weaknesses, along with clear step-by-step instructions for revision.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING:

When you need help at the beginning of a writing project, call on me to assist you with conception and planning.  You’ll have an outline to work with in no time.

SUBSTANTIVE EDITING:

When you have a rough draft that lacks focus and structure, I can work with you to identify the main idea, and reorganize the material into a coherent piece of writing.

COPY EDITING:

This is the most basic form of editing and involves correcting misspelled words, grammar errors, and typos, as well as adding transitional words.  I use Track Changes when I edit for style, so my clients can accept or reject the changes as they see fit.

PROOFREADING:

Proofreading, which is usually the final step before production, involves checking the final version against the corrected draft(s) to make sure all changes have been made and no errors remain.  Proofreading usually includes text, images, font, formatting, and design elements, such as for a cover and spine of a book.
